..... A BENEFIT REALIZED JUST BY BEING A CO-OP MEMBER
The equity of an electric cooperative is owned entirely by the members of the cooperative. Members contribute to the equity by paying their bills and generating margins each year (money left over after expenses are paid). Each year these margins are allocated to each member based on how much electricity they purchased from the co-op. The equity is returned to members over time through the payment of Member Dividends. Member Dividends are also know as patronage capital or capital credits.
Each year the Board of Directors reviews Consumers Energy’s financial position and determines whether or not to pay Member Dividends. At that time, the Board of Directors also determines the member equity percentage to be returned to the entire membership.
